Music Librarian and Personal Assistant

Overview

David Bloom seeks a highly organized, musically fluent part-time assistant to support his work as a conductor, music director, and educator. This role supports Bloom’s work with Queer Urban Orchestra, New York University, Contemporaneous, Present Music, and freelance opera and concert projects nationwide.

The assistant will work closely with Bloom on music library management, score preparation, artistic planning, and professional communications. This is an ideal position for an emerging arts administrator, librarian, or musician with strong notation and organizational skills.

Qualifications

  • Exceptionally organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed

  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively

  • Excellent music reading skills and fluency with orchestral scores and parts

  • Strong experience with Sibelius Ultimate (required)

  • Access to a computer capable of running Sibelius; license can be provided, if necessary

  • Strong handwriting for score and part marking

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive), PDFs, and basic file management

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Intention to remain in NYC for at least two years

Responsibilities

  • Music Library

    • Scan, label, and archive scores and parts

    • Hand-mark scores and parts with provided details (bowings, cues, cuts, translations, expressive markings) on paper and iPad

    • Maintain an organized system of physical and digital music materials

  • Music Engraving

    • Prepare scores and parts in Sibelius

    • Transcribe scores into Sibelius Ultimate

  • Artistic Planning & Administration

    • Research composers, works, and editions

    • Assist with programming documents, rehearsal schedules, and artistic proposals

    • Draft and track communications with institutions, presenters, and collaborators

    • Assist with booking, scheduling, and travel planning

  • Career & Communications

    • Maintain an archive of conducting videos, photos, and press materials

    • Assist with website updates and maintenance

    • Create or format graphics and text for social media posts

    • Maintain an email list and send periodic email campaigns

    • Track industry, donor, and personal contacts and assist with sending invitations

  • Operations

    • Prepare agendas and take notes for weekly meetings

    • Run occasional business-related errands

    • Other projects as assigned

Work Schedule

  • Weekly meetings: in-person in Park Slope, ideally Monday mornings

  • Remote work: remaining tasks completed remotely

  • Estimated workload: 8-12 hours per week, varying by project

  • Start date: February 2, 2026

  • Trial Period: The first 30 days will serve as a paid trial period to confirm fit, workflow, and expectations.

Compensation

$30-36 per hour, depending on experience
